Coury House
Coury House is named in memory of 2Lt Gabriel George Coury VC, who was serving in the 1/4th South Lancashire Regiment, the pioneer battalion to the 55th West Lancashire Division, when he was awarded the VC for his gallantry on the 8th August 1916, in the area of Arrow Head Copse, just over a mile north from the billet and Hardecourt.
His citation was published on 26th October 1916 and read as follows: 'For most conspicuous bravery. During an advance he was in command of two platoons ordered to dig a communication trench from the old firing line to the position won. By his fine example and utter contempt of danger he kept up his task under intense fire. Later, after his battalion had suffered severe casualties and the Commanding Officer had been wounded, he went out in front of the advanced position in broad daylight and in full view of the enemy found his CO, and brought him back to the new advanced trench over ground swept by machine gun fire'.
Coury House was created from the conversion and renovation of the old farm stables. It is fully modernised and comfortable, but still keeps some of the old features of the farm. Below are some of the Great War relics and munitions that have been found in the garden during the renovation and digging of the trench for the new septic tank for Coury & Dupres Houses. They include two live stokes mortar bombs, several bullets - British, German and French, lead shrapnel, hundreds of shell splinters and many other items.
