Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions about Snowden House and the amenities in the local area. In the lounge is a large folder that gives more in-depth information on everything you could need to know about the house, amenities, tourist information and Great War local sites.
Q. Is the price quoted per person or total.
The price is the total price for everyone in your party based on £14 per person per night, with a minimum charge of six guests for three nights.
Q. Is Bed Linen & Bedding provided?
All Bedding and Linen (sheets, duvets, duvet covers and pillow cases) are included in the price.
Q. Are towels provided?
We don’t provide towels, but towels can be arranged at extra cost, £5 for two towels, 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel.
Q. Is the heating/electric included in the price?
All primary heating the oil fired central heating and wall heaters are included in the price.
Q. Do you provide wood for the wood burners?
Wood for the open fire and wood burner can be purchased from the garage or in the local supermarkets.
Q. Is there a Barbeque?
There is a large brick/iron BBQ with electric fan under the front garden terrace and a mobile wheeled BBQ is in the garage. Bags of BBQ coals and fire lighters can be purchased in the garage, just leave the money in the honesty tin.
Q. Is there a TV.
TV and Video is in the lounge with a selection of videos. More video’s are available In the garage store. Basic UK Sky satalite is being installed sometime during the spring.
Q. Do you allow pets.
One well behaved trained pet is permitted, (see terms & conditions).
Q. What do we do with the keys when we leave?
The keys can be left in the metal post box on the wall next to the front door on the Store/barn wall.
Q. Is it ok to drink the tap water?
The water is safe to drink but is very soft, caused by the Somme chalk. We supply water filters. But we recommend that you use bottled water from the supermarket for drinking.
Q. Do you provide Battlefield Tours?
Snowden House does not conduct Battlefield tours at the present time, but if you would like a tour we can arrange one for you with one of the local guides.
Q. Do you have self guide Battlefield Tours?
We have six (at present) self guided walks for the local area around the village, they all have a route map, trench maps and give historical information on route. We also leave Somme guide books available for guests to use.
Q. Do you have any Great War research material?
Snowden House has its own small library of around 100 books, all cover the Great War and mainly the Battle of the Somme.
Q. Is there a food shop in the Village?
There isn't a shop in the Village. The nearest small shops are in Combles about two miles away, they include a small food shop, bakery, chemist and Post Office.
Q. How far is the nearest supermarket?
Longueval is centrally located between Albert, Peronne and Bapaume all are about 12km’s. All have large supermarkets located on the main roads as you enter the towns from the direction of Longueval. Opening times:
Monday - 1000-1230. 1430-1930. Tuesday - Saturday 0900- 1930. Sunday - CLOSED. (except)
Q. Are there any shops open on a Sunday.
There are two smaller supermarkets open on Sunday mornings from 0900 - 1200. One is the 'Shoppi' in the centre of Bray-sur-Somme about 8 miles from Longueval and the other is the 'Champion' on the Albert road, Bapuame about 6 miles from Longueval.
Q. Where is the nearest Petrol/Diesel garage?
The nearest fuel pumps are outside the Le Calypso cafe, Longueval. There are also larger garages in both Albert, Bapaume and Peronne the BP in Albert is open on Sundays.
Q. Where is the nearest Post Office?
The nearest Post Office is in Longueval, to the right inside Le Calypso II and there is a larger Post Office in Combles, three miles from Longueval. There are main Post Offices in both, Albert, Bapaume and Peronne.
Q. Is there anywhere to eat out?
The nearest place to eat out is the Calypso in Longueval (book in advance) or there are numerous restaurants in and around Albert, Bapaume & Peronne. There is a list in the information folder.
Q. Where is the nearest bar?
The nearest bar is the Calypso in Longueval (staggering distance) or Tommies in Pozieres (2-3 miles). There are numerous bars in both Albert, Peronne and Bapaume.
Q. Are there any local telephones, do mobile phones work?
There is a telephone box in the village, it only takes cards that can be bought almost anywhere. All main Mobile phone networks have a signal from Snowden House and the village.
Q. Where is the nearest Doctor / Hospital?
The nearest Doctors is in Combles, the nearest chemist is in Combles and the nearest hospitals are in Albert and Peronne.
Q. Where are the nearest vets?
There are Vets in Peronne and Bapaume, they are both use to dealing with British tourists and their pets, pet passports, etc.
Q. Is there any local public transport?
There is very limited bus service to the village. There are a few taxi’s in Albert, average fare from Longueval to Albert was 35 euro in 2007. There is free parking at the SNCF train station in Albert and the TGV train station at Assevillers. Both stations have trains to Paris, the SNCF is cheaper, slower and you have to change at Amiens. The TGV is fast and more expensive.
